It just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover. The only child of Japanese scientist Souichi Tomoe and his American wife Keiko, Hotaru was born in Tokyo, Japan the cold night of January 6. The unfortunate truth is that her childhood was very abnormal. Hotaru was very young when her mother was killed in a fire, so she has no real memories of her mother. Her father, Doctor Tomoe, was overcome with the loss of his wife and through himself more into his scientific work trying to smother the pain that way. While it may have helped him ease the loss it hurt Hotaru more than he realised. Hotaru was always a weak child, a childhood sickness leaving her frail and vulnerable to virus' and bacterial germs. This meant she couldn't participate in outdoor activities such as running, gym class, or even extended horse play. Because of her shyness and her odd ability to heal people who had been hurt Hotaru found herself being shunned by people who were once her friends. As the years passed and Hotaru grew up she began to stay more and more to herself. Only leaving the Tomoe household when she had to. Like her father she found ways to bury her pain deeply inside of her. She read and collected lamps and spent time with her father when he was home. Several years passed this way. While father and daughter were close and loved each other very much they never quite saw enough of each other. Doctor Tomoe had a presentation to give one morning and decided that instead of leaving Hotaru at home where she would be all alone for the day he would take her to his lab with him. Hotaru, excited by the idea of spending a whole day in her father's company, happily went along. During his lecture to fellow scientists Hotaru gazed in typical childhood awe into the machine her father had built. Inside a weird light was growing. Turning to tell her father what she was seeing Hotaru never had time to open her mouth. The explosion that rocked the lamp not only cut her off but also killed her. Overcome with grief Doctor Tomoe cradled his limp daughter and screamed his rage and agony at the ceiling. When a voice later identified as Germatoid, a daemon, asked if he would give up his soul to bring her back he hastily agreed. Hotaru was indeed brought back to life but she now had to share her body with the enitity know as Mistress 9. Upon opening her eyes Hotaru watched in horror as Germatoid invaded her father's body and took over. A year passed and to the outside world nothing in the Tomoe household had changed. Doctor Tomoe still worked in a lab doing experimentation and Hotaru was still a lonely girl without any friends. A year after the episode in the laboratory Doctor Tomoe opened Mugen High School and Hotaru began to attend school regularly there. Unbeknowest to the public Doctor Tomoe was using Mugen as a front for his DeathBusters group. Hotaru again was at odds with her classmates who looked on her as a freak of nature because of her healing abilities and her shy nature. Fortunately for the young girl, she met a girl with pink hair one day in the park when the girl's hat went flying off her head. The girl's name was ChibiUsa, two became fast friends. Through ChibiUsa Hotaru also made friends with Usagi and the Sailor Scouts. ChibiUsa and Hotaru began to spend more and more time together much to Doctor Tomoe's delight. He was happy that Hotaru had finally found a friend. During all of this the DeathBusters had been searching for the Talisman's to release Mistress 9 who was dwelling inside of Hotaru. There were several instances when Mistress 9's power was visable. Several times when she shone through but Hotaru always managed to overcome the young host. These episodes always left Hotaru drained and worried ChibiUsa terribly who knew there was something terribly wrong with her friend but didn't know what. As time went on and Mistress 9 grew more powerful Doctor Tomoe decided it was best that Hotaru stay more to herself and inside Mugen High. There he had a throne room of sorts constructed for her and Hotaru, now moreover Mistress 9 spent most of time sitting on her throne and trying to save her strength. ChibiUsa was upset over the disappearance of her friend. During a fight between Sailors Uranus (Haruka Tenoh), Neptune (Michiru Kaioh), Mercury (Ami Mizuno) and one of the Witches 5, Hotaru was discovered in the throne room. Thanks to Sailor Mercury Hotaru lived but vanished again. Hotaru would regain control of herself from time to time, but more often than not it was Mistress 9 who was in control now. Eventually they would find the pure heart needed - the heart of Hotaru's friend ChibiUsa, and the evil in Hotaru would awaken (with the Talismans). The battle that followed Mistress 9's emergence was long and emotionally hard on everyone. Sailor Moon who was fighting to save ChibiUsa, Doctor Tomoe who after a fight with Neptune and Uranus was depossessed and wanted his daughter back and most of all for Hotaru who was fighting for her life. The battle ended when Hotaru finally regained control over Mistress 9 and the Messiah of Silence disentigrated leaving the symbol of Saturn hanging in the air. Hotaru appeared then but she was no longer Hotaru she was Sailor Saturn, the Sailor Scout of Destruction. Ultimately Pharoah 90 was destroyed (only after killing Doctor Tomoe) and Hotaru was saved by Sailor Moon... no longer was she a young lady however; Hotaru had been reborn as an infant. After her rebirth - with her father now gone, the Outer Scouts took Hotaru in and adopted her. She was re-raised by Michiru Kaioh, Haruka Tenou and Setsuna Meiou, as well as Usagi Tsukino (who is like another mother to her). During the final encounter she aged back to thirteen and she always seems to worry that for some reason she is going to de-age again - despite assurances that she won't from Setsuna. Unfortunately Hotaru is still rather weak, she still cannot take part in Physical Education classes and is rather pale - a stark contrast to her dark hair. Despite it all she loving and attends high school. She still had the ability to heal with her hands, and while she has to keep it from people, if there is an incident she does not hesitate to use them... it is only in the aftermath that she realizes that it is a mistake.
